In its 8-9 minutes, Dmitri Volkov divides his Chorale for Percussion into four sections (drums, clicks, grains, metals). Timbre and rhythm become the chorale's structure rather than the usual pitch and harmony. A rhythmic phrase is the work's seed, one that is featured in its climax. Volkov's pieces have been performed by members of major orchestras (including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, and Baltimore Symphony ) and chamber groups including the Neave Trio.
