Thistledown takes its title from a time-travelling spaceship in the sci-fi novel Eon by Greg Bear. The vessel, which resembles an asteroid, is filled with cylindrical chambers, including one that is a path to alternate universes. Composed for and premiered by the Either/Or Ensemble, George Lewis likens that ship's vast halls to his piece's unique collection of spaces for the audience to 'visit and inhabit.' That they can overlap roughly contrasts with the gentle name shared by the strong ship and this chamber music.
