Akropolis - Cantata
for mixed chorus and orchestra
score
Bacewicz, Grazyna
Wyspianski, Stanislaw, lyrics
The cantata Akropolis for mixed choir and orchestra was written for the
occasion of the six-hundredth anniversary of the Jagiellonian University's
foundation. The first performance of the composition took place on 10 May
1964, the Cracow Philharmonic Ochestra and Choir were conducted by Andrzej
Markowski. In this short work the composer used an excerpt of Stanisaw
Wyspiaski's Akropolis. It is a solemn piece of music as befits an occasional
composition but at the same time it bears an individual mark of the
composer's style.
